Printed in the journal on Friday – follow up to a report in Tuesday’s Journal:

I read with interest your report of the opinion poll showing the majority of residents in our area in favour of protecting the Green Belt from housing developments proposed across the region.
It occurs to me that the younger age group, who were more in favour of abandoning the Green Belt perhaps because of their need for starter homes, do not realise that developers predominantly want to build expensive 3/4 bed “executive” houses on identikit estates, to boost their profits.
On Monday members of protest groups from Gateshead and Newcastle handed in our submissions to be considered by the Inspector in advance of the Public Inquiry next year. Your pictures showed groups from Ryton and Ponteland, other groups include Throckley Callerton and Dunston Hill, all united in the view that social housing on brownfield sites should be developed first.
Terrible mistakes were made in the Dan Smith era when Newcastle Council thought “system built” housing was the answer to housing need. It wasn’t.
Your poll suggests that most residents feel that development would be another grave mistake, resulting in the loss of much of the green lung of our Tyneside area.
